The Urban Institute has released the result of a study that showed around 77 million Americans are having a hard time paying debts on schedule.

That means more than a third of the country are delinquent in paying their debts on time, with Nevada having the highest concentration of delinquents at 46.9 percent.

States with more than 40% concentration of delinquents include Washington D.C, South Carolina, Louisianna, West Virginia, New Mexico, Florida, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Nevada, Texas, North Carolinoa, Mississippi, and Kentucky.

Delinquents have been classified as those that have debt that are past due and have resulted to the closure of accounts. The accounts have also been placed in collections. It also refers to people whose debt has been reported to the credit bureau.

On average, the 77 million Americans with unpaid debts owe USD5,200, which includes medical bills, parking tickets, utility bills, credit cards bills, child support or membership fees.

Josh Bivens of the Economic POlicy Institute said the number of delinquent Americans is "disheartening".

"The data is a powerful reminder that many Americans are still experiencing economic stability since the end of the recession," Bivens said.

The Urban Institute research only covers Americans with a credit file and does not include consumers who belong to the lower-income bracket.

Bankrate.com Chief Financial Analyst Greg McBride, however, said that significant number of the 77 million Americans with debt in collection do not know that they are already delinquent.

Some people, especially those with medical bills, also often think that their payables were already picked up by their insurance providers, said McBride.

Overall, American's debt loads mostly come from mortgages, which make up 70 percent.
