(Photo : Reuters) CIG's Star Citizen recently had up to 48GB of content leaked online.

Earlier today, Microsoft and Linux's "under construction" game "Star Citizen" and producer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) took a pretty nasty blow, as they suffered an assets leak cumulating to more than 48GB of previously unreleased assets. The rendered graphics were leaked through a YouTube video.

The assets included a pretty solid rendering of the background of the game, as well as what seems to be an upgraded and gigantic Bengal Carrier, which would no doubt take a lot of people just to control. Nevertheless, while the graphics are already set up to an extent, the video shows that the leaked piece is still clearly a work in progress.

Reports surfaced, saying that the leak was made possible when a CIG community manager posted a screenshot of the gameplay of "Star Citizen"; however, unfortunately, the screenshot included the partial URL. Before CIG even got a chance to notice the error, the leak was already circulating around the Web.

Fortunately for CIG and "Star Citizen," this leak only amounted to a few spoilers of the game's graphics and possibly some of its mechanics. CIG reassured fans that those with copies of the leaked game assets could do very little with the information, unless they have a consumer version of the CRYENGINE used by the developers.

This is not the first time assets of a major game development were accidentally leaked to the general public. In 2013, Sony accidentally leaked the soundtrack and main theme music of "Grand Theft Auto V," one of the biggest game releases of the year that time.

"Star Citizen," on the other hand, will be a space simulator game consisting of two main components, first-person space combat and as well as mining and trading features. The game is set in a dynamic, massively multiplayer persistent universe. Customizable private servers will be enabled, as well as co-op modes, available through a campaign called "Squadron 42." "Star Citizen" runs on an upgraded CryEngine operating system, and will feature extensive support for Oculus Rift consoles.

The game's storyline will be centered on a fictional future Milky Way galaxy. "Star Citizen" will focus on gamer interaction, with various behaviors and decision-making skills playing an important role in the game's complex and dynamic economic system.
