Boxing News & Rumors: Amir Khan Not Underestimating Chris Algieri Amid Floyd Mayweather Rumors

British boxing star Amir Khan is reportedly not underestimating the challenge of American Chris Algieri when they face off on their coming 12-round welterweight bout at the Barclay's Center in New York this Friday.

Speculations have been widespread that if the 28-year-old two-time champion convincingly defeats Algieri on Friday, the potential fight with pay-per-view king Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September will be in the bag, according to Manchester Evening News' Sheldan Keay.

"There's talk of a Mayweather fight and other big fights but I'm just fully focused on this one," Khan said, as reported at SkySports News HQ. "There's always talk about that happening but I've made the mistake of looking past opponents before and I'm not going to make that mistake again."

He then went on to say that even if he is "within touching distance" of possibly the biggest fight of his life, and the biggest paycheck of his career, against the undefeated Mayweather, he wants to focus and finish off Algieri first before entertaining any thoughts about that.

He said that he believes the fight with Mayweather will always be around the corner, and even mentioned that it was prominently brought up during the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight earlier this month.

In an article written by Mailonline UK's Martin Domin, Khan admitted that The Money Team "are waiting for a bad fight from me" so that they can dismiss the fight with him and tell him that he was "not good enough."

"They are hoping I have a bad performance," Khan said, referring to Mayweather's team.

He also claimed that the reason Mayweather's team hopes for him to look bad against Algieri is that the number one pound-for-pound fighter is afraid to face him.

This is will only be Khan's third fight at the welterweight limit and he hopes to stay in this category until the fight with Mayweather.
