Simple Blood Test is Very Effective at Detecting Cancer

LGS Test

People can now be tested for possible cancers using a simple blood test called the Lymphocyte Genome Sensitivity (LGS) Test.

In this test, researchers look at the damage in white blood cells in a patient's DNA when subjected to ultraviolet light (UVA) that can cause damage to the DNA.

Diana Anderson of the University of Bradford in England said that white blood cells are part of the body's natural defense system and therefore put the cells under stress where they effectively fight cancer.

Researchers found that people with cancer have DNA that can easily be damaged by ultraviolet light compared to people who don't have cancer.

With the LGS test, doctors can distinguish potential cancer patients while saving time, money and unnecessary invasive procedures.

Researchers studying DNA samples from 208 individuals saw UVA damage in DNA subjected to an electric field.

Anderson said these results came from three different types of cancers: melanoma, colon cancer and lung cancer.

Researchers identified significant differences between healthy volunteers and suspected cancer patients.

They believe this test can be a great cancer diagnostic tool but admit that further work has to be done to make it better.

Early results have already showed great promise because of LGS' accuracy in diagnosing cancer and pre-cancerous conditions.

To date, the researchers continue with their clinical trials at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
