Zac Efron Opens Up to Bear Grylls About Addiction and Needing a "Social Lubricant"

Zac Efron went on a two-day trip on Running Wild with Bear Grylls where he had no trouble jumping out of a helicopter and eating worms with British adventurer and TV show host Bear Grylls.

The Bad Neighbors actor also opened up about his past battles with substance abuse.

On the series premiere of Running Wild, Efron and Grylls were shown to be lounging beside a fire after their adventure for the day has ended. The subject of the actor's rehab stint turned up, and Efron seemed ready to talk about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction.

Grylls asked Efron as to what has caused him to go to rehab. "The challenging part was never the work," Efron responded. "That was never it. It was sort of the in-between work. The social aspects outside of it, I mean, everywhere you go, to a certain extent, there is press in some form.

The 26-year-old actor added, "If you are leaving your house to go to the grocery store, there will be press there. It can be confusing. You spend a lot of time in your house, going crazy. Pretty soon, you need a social lubricant. Once I needed that, it became to go anywhere."

Efron also mentioned about experiencing a phase in life where he cared less about work and wanted more out of the weekend. He added, "I couldn't wait to go out and let loose and have fun, but then when Monday and Tuesday were difficult to get through, I thought, this is bad."

Although the actor has sought to leave his addiction behind, he admitted that it has been difficult for him. Fortunately, Efron may be working on a new point of view on life these days.

"I just really never again want to have to take anything from the outside into me to feel good about my outside, to be comfortable in my present skin," he said. "And that takes a lot of work."
