The parole board of double-amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius recently endorsed for the 28-year-old's release on August 21, just 10 months after his jail sentence, according to CNN

In October 2014, Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison for culpable homicide in the 2013 Valentine's Day murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Though culpable homicide means unlawful murder in South Africa, it also means unintentional killing. Because the judge did not find Pistorius guilty of murdering Steenkamp, prosecutors are still trying to appeal that verdict.

The Oscar Pistorius parole came 10 months into his five-year sentence, and it is found to be above board of the procedures of the justice system, according to The Guardian.

In South Africa, a lawbreaker can only be released after one-sixth of his/her jail sentence, and that is for house arrest. Also, that is if the original sentence does not surpass five years.

If the athlete was convicted of murder during his 2014 trial, Oscar Pistorius' parole would have had no chance this August as he would have received the minimum sentence of 15 years.

Thokozile Masipa, the judge during his trial, chose culpable homicide as his sentence, which meant it had no prescribed minimum.

However, the August Oscar Pistorius parole might not be his last. The state is reportedly still appealing a murder acquittal for the 28-year-old set for November. If it becomes successful, Pistorius will be sent to prison again after just a few months as a free man.

The Reeva Steenkamp murder took place in his home. He allegedly shot Steenkamp through his toilet door and killed her, but he claims that it had been an accident because he thought she was an intruder.

The parole decision was met with outrage by Steenkamp's parents, reported PEOPLE.

"Incarceration of 10 months for taking a life is simply not enough," June and Barry Steenkamp said in a statement to the parole board, according to a CBS News report. "We fear that this will not send out the proper message and serve as the deterrent it should."

Pistorius' legs were amputated before he turned 1. In 2012, he joined the London Summer Olympics and became the first double-amputee athlete to participate in the Olympic Games. He ran the 400-meter race as well as the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Since the O. J. Simpson trial, Pistorius' case has been one of the most dramatic in history. Simpson was an American football player who became a sports announcer and a movie star. He was charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Nicole's friend Ronald Goldman in 1994, reported CNN.
