Los Angeles Lakers’ Steve Nash May Retire Next Season

Los Angeles Lakers point guard Steve Nash has indicated that the upcoming National Basketball Association (NBA) season may be his last.

The 40-year-old Nash confessed in a recent interview with SportsTV that retirement is at his horizon now.

"I think this is my last season," he said. "It'll be nice to play one more year."

Nash only played 15 games last season, averaging 6.8 points and 5.7 assists, due to lower back problems in which he has a nerve root irritation that cannot be cured and can only be controlled. It took Lakers' medical team almost half of the season just to get it under control.

The Lakers considered waiving him of the stretch provision which means that his last salary will be spread in three years instead of one but opted not to. With that, Nash had the financial capability as free agent in summer of 2015.

Los Angeles appeared to be preparing for his replacement in acquiring Jeremy Lin from the Houston Rockets. The team also signed Jordan Clarkson who was selected 46th overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2014 NBA draft and was later traded that night to LA.

Clarkson came out of the University of Missouri Tigers. He is a guard that can play both shooting and as point, and will most likely be a candidate of filling Nash's shoes.

Los Angeles recently introduced Byron Scott as new head coach and Scott hopes that Nash will be healthy this season in order for him to be utilized at point with team captain Kobe Bryant playing shooting guard.

Nash led the NBA in assists during his long-time stint with the Phoenix Suns.
