Last week marked the deadliest week in the four-year Syrian civil war, with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reporting that more that 1,700 people have died in the past week alone.

The huge number of casualties could be attributed to increased operations of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in Syria.

Both ISIS and Syrian government forces have avoided each other previously, but due to the increasing amounts of land being taken over by ISIS and its declaration of a 'caliphate,' active engagement have taken place between them.

The 'caliphate' that ISIS declared a few weeks ago also included several part of northern Syria, where the major belligerents of the crisis - the Syrian government, militias/rebels and ISIS - have come into contact with one another.

In an armed encounter between government forces and ISIS in the Shaar gas field in central Syria, 270 Syrian soldiers and government employees were killed.

While militias continue their fight against government forces, several militias have also started fighting one another as they jockeyed for their own territories.

Additionally, fighting between ISIS and militias has occurred in the province of Deir Ezzor as ISIS tries to consolidate control over the area. ISIS was eventually able to capture all militia-controlled neighborhoods.

Lastly, Shelling by Syrian government forces in Aleppo have resulted in 230 civilian deaths. The government seems to have intensified its operations in Aleppo as it has become a significant area that symbolizes influence and power.

It is expected that casualties will continue to increase as ISIS continues its offensive across the region.
