"Passengers", a sci-fi romance film featuring A-list Hollywood superstars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt had been a too-good-to-be-true project. But now it's official. The outer space movie is going into production soon, but not without a bit of behind-the-scenes drama.

The pay dispute between Sony Pictures and Lawrence was lengthy enough that many thought the film would not push through. From $10 million, Pratt's fee shot to $12 million, while Lawrence got a whopping $20 million, according to sources.

Pratt became famous following "Parks and Recreation" when he starred in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" as Star-Lord. Most recently, he also gained the lead role in the box office hit "Jurassic World."

Lawrence on the other hand became famous for her role as the lead in the "Hunger Games" trilogy as well as the "X-men" franchise. She also won an Oscar for her role in David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook." In addition, she appeared in "American Hustle."

Pre-production of the big-budget "Passengers" is currently handled by Sony Pictures' Chairman Tom Rothman. Oscar nominee Morten Tyldum, director of the biopic, "The Imitation Game," is set to helm the project. The original script of the film has reportedly been around Hollywood for years.

Taking place aboard a spacecraft heading towards a distant planet, "Passengers" will show Pratt under cryogenic sleep but waking up 90 years early. Since Pratt cannot go back to sleep for some unknown reason, he wakes up Lawrence and romance flourishes between the two. There are also other passengers on the ship under cryogenic sleep, according to Cinema Blend.

Filming of "Passengers" will begin in September so Sony has reportedly been under pressure to act on the actors' fees.

According to sources, Rothman has been wrestling whether to greenlight, turnaround, or place the film with Jeff Robinov's Studio 8, partly owned by Sony.

Rothman, 60, reportedly told filmmakers they can take the movie somewhere else, but when they mentioned Studio 8, Rothman immediately changed his mind.

According to sources, Rothman already safeguarded financing partners Village Roadshow and LStar. They will be covering for as much as 75 percent of the film's budget, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Before Sony Pictures, "Passengers" had been a Weinstein Co. project and Hollywood actors Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon were set to star in the film. Rachel McAdams had also been attached to the project most recently.

There is no word yet on when the film debuts in theaters, according to Vanity Fair.
