Former chief of Google Maps Brian McClendon joins Uber cabs as he will oversee the operations of the Advanced Technology Centre of Uber, according to the latest Uber News.

According to Recode, McClendon, a Google veteran who was previously associated to the Google Maps division, is all set to join Uber in his new role where he will be responsible for the operations of the Advanced Technology Centre, which is located in Pittsburgh. NASDAQ  also confirmed that McClendon's profile will be similar to what he was doing at Google.

The technology expert will be overlooking the mapping, self-driving car technology and vehicle safety efforts in Uber.  As part of his job, McClendon will be reporting to Chief Product Officer Jeff Holden.

Meanwhile the report also quotes Holden expressing his thoughts on McClendon joining the Uber team. Calling him an excellent engineer and technology expert, Holden said that McClendon's association to Google involved spearheading big projects like Google Maps, Google Earth and many more.

McClendon also holds the distinction of being amongst the few Googlers to join the search engine giant when they acquired Keyhole, where his formal association to Google began in 2004. Later on, Google went on to make the maps a public app that continues to be much appreciated as an app even today.

Needless to say, his hard work and talent reportedly led to the success of several projects. In fact, even in Google, he was amongst the few executives who was given the charge of an important product portfolio inspite of not being a part of the CEO's inner circle of associates.

In October 2014, McClendon was replaced by Jen Fitzpatrick, another Google veteran, and ever since, he was rumored to have been working on a special project that was nowhere related to mapping technology.

His work and expertise in the mapping techniques is what made him a sought-after target for recruitment at Uber, particularly because the company has been reportedly struggling to strengthen its position in the market.

Earlier in March, Uber acquired deCarta, a firm known to provide mapping technology assistance.
