Hu Bing is bringing UK fashion to China. As the newly-appointed brand ambassador for UK menswear, the British Fashion Council expects the Chinese supermodel to boost sales for brands like Burberry in the country.

Hu Bing will not disappoint as his portfolio is certainly promising.

Who is Hu Bing?

Hu has been one of China's most famous actors who won the award for Best Actor at the 2010 International Rome Film Festival. He won the award for his lead role in the film "The Back."

The youthful-looking 44-year-old is also a part-time singer and a former Olympic rower.

He has long been considered China's top male model, with Valentino Garavani having called him Beijing's best male model since 1993, reported The Telegraph.

Among the brands Hu has worked for include Dunhill, Cartier, Gucci, and Ferragamo, and the list goes on.

The equivalent of London Fashion Week is under way in China this weekend, according to the BBC, and therefore, it is not at all surprising that Hu is now working for the BFC and promoting British fashion internationally.

Working as BFC's first-ever international style ambassador, Hu will not only champion UK menswear in his homeland but also go far beyond its borders.

It also does not hurt that the popular actor has 10 million followers on microblogging site Weibo, China's Twitter counterpart.

"The Chinese like British brands, but they don't say 'British fashion,'" he said in an interview. "They just say 'European fashion.' Sometimes they mix up London, Paris, and Milan, when the fashion is all totally different."

Hu also recognizes the challenge of introducing British fashion to China.

French and Italian fashion brands led by Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, and Gucci have dominated most of China in luxury fashion, according to a recent World Luxury Index. British brand Burberry was only in the Top 10.

"I need to do a lot of work," Hu admitted. "I have a responsibility to present London fashion as London fashion."

"London is more easygoing and more fun," he continued. "Designers are more afraid in Asia and in New York and Paris. But in London people really just enjoy themselves. They feel confidant. That is the difference."

China's current economy is at its low; however, the BFC's decision in choosing Hu is considered clever. They excitedly explained their decision in a recent statement.

"We are thrilled that Hu Bing has become an International Ambassador for London Collections Men, as his enormous influence, knowledge of the Chinese market and enthusiasm for fashion makes him a perfect choice," said Dylan Jones, chair of LCM. "Having an International Ambassador in China is key to the development of London Collections Men."

China menswear sales has grown 7 percent since last year despite the big picture, according to Euromonitor. Menswear in China now surprisingly has a bigger hold in apparel sales as compared to womenswear.

According to Euromonitor, by 2017, China will hold second place in the market of luxury menswear, trailing behind the United States. The country currently holds the fifth largest market globally in luxury menswear sales.

Since its first showcase in 2012, Chinese press and buyers appearing in men's fashion week has also doubled, according to CNN, showing a promising future and a wise decision for the BFC in choosing Hu Bing.
