Instagram now has 400 million monthly active users worldwide larger than Twitter.

Instagram is making moves to unseat Twitter as the king of trending topics on the web with the launch of a new feature called "Explore."

The feature would allow users to find real-time events and news as they happen. Going this route proves the obsession of social media companies have in real-time events and news.

Like Us on Facebook

It can be noted that not too long ago,  Twitter announced a new feature called "Project Lightning" that will track tweets, videos, and photos from live events anywhere in the world.

It is similar to the idea that brought Periscope to life.

"People are hungry for what's happening right now in the world," Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom told The Wall Street Journal. "All of us in social media and regular media, we're all competing for the same thing, which is this gap between something happening in the world and you knowing about it."

The goal here is to give over 300 million users the same type of real-time update that Twitter delivers on a daily basis. Whether or not it will become more attractive than what Twitter is offering right now is still left to be seen, though we doubt it will become a game changer in the short term.

Nevertheless, we can't pass it off because when Instagram released its video feature to compete with Vine, it took off very quickly and is now one of the most used.

With over 70 million videos and pictures posted on Instagram on a daily basis, the company believes that whenever anything is posted, the new Explore feature would allow users to never miss a beat.

We like the changes for it could allow users to keep track of world-changing events such as the deadly Charleston, S.C. shooting that took the life of nine innocent souls. Furthermore, other important world events such as the World Cup and Olympics could push Instagram's new feature into the mainstream very fast.

Look out Twitter, Instagram is coming fast.
