David Sweat, the second convicted murderer, whose daring escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility made headlines and sparked a 23-day manhunt involving 1,300 law enforcement officers, has been rearrested on Sunday after being shot by a state trooper near a Canadian border.

The capture of 35-year-old Sweat, who had been serving a life sentence without parole, comes just two days after his fellow jail breaker, Richard Matt, was shot and killed following an armed face-off with police officers in the woods of Malone, N. Y.

AP reports that Sgt. Jay Cook shot Sweat twice in the torso after he attempted to flee when he realized that Cook, who was on a routine patrol, had recognized him. Cook, a 21-year-old veteran, chanced upon Sweat jogging down a road in Constable, a northern New York town, 30 miles northwest of the prison.

Sweat was shot around 3:20 p.m. after the State Police sergeant asked him to stop and come over. Instead he turned and ran across a field toward a tree line. Cook reportedly gave chase before opening fire on Sweat as he made his way to the woods.

"I can only assume he was going for the border," Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said.

NY Times reports that Sweat, who was spotted just miles near the Canadian border wearing camouflage clothing, was first transported to the Alice Hyde Medical Center for treatment. As of Sunday night, he is said to have been in critical condition at the Albany Medical Center.

It's still unclear if Sweat would need to undergo surgery. However, a medical director at the Albany Medical Center said he would have to remain at the facility "for at least a series of days."

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo expressed relief and joy at Sweat's arrest during a press conference held in Malone on Sunday night. "The nightmare is finally over," he said, adding that the escaped convicts "Were really dangerous, dangerous men."

According to Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie, Sweat has not yet being questioned by investigators. Prosecutors would reportedly wait for Sweat's recovery before charging him.

Reports reveal that Sweat would be charged with escape, burglary and other charges. Authorities suspect that he and Matt broke into several cabins in the bucolic region during their run.

Matt was serving 25 years to life for killing and dismembering his former employer, while Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole for killing a sheriff's deputy in Broome County.

Both convicts reportedly employed long term planning, subterfuge, manipulation of prison employees and power tools to ensure their daring escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility.
