Two windsurfers were photographed riding the current of Nanjing's city-wide flood on Tuesday. Torrential downpour that lasted for days since Friday dumped more than 441 mm of rain. The resulting floodwater, which Chinese Portal estimated to have reached 70 cm in certain areas, allowed for the pair's leisurely take on what is commonly seen as an inconvenience to many of the residents.

People took to social media their theories on the possible reason behind the duo's recreational approach to the flood. According to Shanghaiist, a number of netizens pointed out that the windsurfers must be using the occasion to promote their water sports club. However, club officials denied the allegation.

The surfers aired their side of the story and explained that they were on the way to help a company fix a broken boat. Their vehicle got submerged in one of the flooded streets and they decided to travel on their boards instead. One of the surfers even stated that what they did was merely for fun and that the chance to play water sports on the streets is definitely rare.

Just in June, Nanjing has reportedly received more rain than usually recorded in six months, South China Morning Post noted. The continuous rains caused many streets and highways to clog and close.

Stranded residents were evacuated by around 1,500 military personnel as the flood reached critical level. Students residing in Nanjing University of Science and Technology had to construct wooden walkways to cross between dormitory buildings. Shanghaiist also reported that the province of Anhui near Nanjing has also been inundated with days of ceaseless downpour. Postmen resorted to using inflatable boats just to deliver mails and packages amid the flood that shows no sign of subsiding soon.

Residents of the swamped city should expect more rainfall until Wednesday but will experience better skies the day after. Jiangsu's provincial meteorological bureau also warned against an increased possibility of landslides in Nanjing and neighboring places. Forecasters explained that the heavy showers are caused by meeting of cold air from the north and warm air from tropical areas.
