YouTube Pumps Up The Video With 60fps On Smartphones

YouTube Allows 60fps For Smartphones

(Photo : Reuters) Users may now browse YouTube on their phones at a whopping ultra high quality.

YouTube took the framerate battle to the mobile arena as it recently launched a system that allowed Android and iOS users to play videos on their smartphones at an impressive 60fps. While the video streaming giant has incorporated framerates this high as far back as October of last year, the 60fps quality has only hit smartphones recently.

Additionally, the 60fts framerate also applies to Apple TV, as well as the Playstation 3 and 4 consoles. Google has recently put YouTube on an upgrade binge, and this latest feature is only the tip of the iceberg.

While, to many, 60fps might seem like stretching the graphic tech too much, video game players have all but applauded the upgrade and quite happily welcomed the new framerate. Hardcore gamers prefer optimal video quality whenever they play, which is why it isn't surprising that the video game industry is the first to jump on the 60 fps bandwagon. According to the Verge, "Video game players and developers are well aware that higher frame rates make animations look better. 30 frames per second is the baseline for quality, but 60 fps is the sweet spot that it seems everyone would ultimately like to hit."

Moreover, it's also important to note that it doesn't take a gamer to realize how much smoother a video that runs on 60fps plays, more than the standard 30fps option.

For users to experience the full 60fps, they only have to browse YouTube (through their smartphones) for videos with the framerate listed in the description, and it should automatically start playing in ultra high definition. If not, they could simply click on the quality settings option and look for the '720p60′ or '1080p60′ selections.

Keep in mind that the 60fps option automatically replaces the 30fps ones, so there's really no going back to the lower resolution.

With this latest quality upgrade, YouTube and Google hope to significantly improve the mobile video viewing experience, and hopefully, put the age of skipped frames to bed for good. Moreover, higher frame rates are also said to have a positive effect of 3D viewing. It's no surprise that YouTube is already taking steps to venture into the newly-formed, highly competitive arena of virtual reality experience.
