On Sunday, the unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket had exploded mid-air two and a half minutes after its takeoff from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The failed mission was meant to deliver supplies and scientific cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).

The unmanned SpaceX rocket was on a resupply mission to bring a SpaceX Dragon capsule filled with 4,000 pounds of supplies, 30 student projects, two HoloLenses, as well as a docking adapter for the ISS that would allow for future commercial crewed capsules to dock with the station, as previously reported. Unfortunately, the rocket had broken up completely after launch, at an altitude of about 34 kilometers.

Aside from the supplies, the rocket also carried scientific experiments created by students. However, the students, who spent months working on the science experiment, were disappointed because their dreams were dampened by the unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket explosion, Oregon Live has learned.

"It's hard," 17-year-old Deborah Jackson said. "We put a lot of work into it. To see it at the bottom of the Atlantic is definitely discouraging."

Jackson was one of about 16 students who helped work on their nanolab project to monitor the effects of zero gravity on corrosion of metals. Their experiment, which was about the size of a butter cube, was one of about 30 packed aboard the rocket.

Another experiment on fruit fly called "A Comparative Study of the Effects of Microgravity on Drosophila Melanogaster," was also destroyed during the explosion, Delaware Online revealed. The project, which would see the impacts of nonexistent gravity on living things, is considered to be significant way to understand the long-term effects of microgravity on the human body as humans begin to explore the possibility of visiting Mars or far more distant places.

The experiments were created by students participating in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program, in which kindergarten through 12th grade and college students can design and submit experiments that will be sent to the ISS. Students from Caravel Academy, McMinnville High School Engineering & Aerospace Sciences Academy and Gresham Middle School, all submitted their experiments and saw their projects destroyed.

Meanwhile, the latest failed SpaceX ISS Resupply Mission has indeed suffered vital loss and setbacks. And though the reason for the explosion is still unknown, NASA is calling the failed launch an anomaly, News Channel 9 reported.
