It's all about the selfie in today's world, which is why MasterCard has come up with a new way for users to pay using the service.

The app MasterCard has come up a design to allow users to pay for goods and services by taking a selfie. It uses facial recognition to identify and verify that the person is indeed the owner of the card.

Once the app is downloaded, users will pay for things by looking into the phone and blinking once. We've come to understand that blinking was put in place to prevent thieves from using a picture of the owner to make purchases.

Addition to taking a selfie, the app can also read fingerprints, so that should be good enough for those who are not too keen on taking a picture in front of a store clerk just to pay for an item.

It's an impressive new app no doubt, but whether or not it will take off in a big way is still left to be seen. Do users want to use something that collects their fingerprint and facial data, or do they simply wish to continue with the tried and tested password system.

MasterCard currently is one of the largest providers of credit and debit cards in over 200 locations around the world. According to the company, a quarter of all credit card transactions are performed using a Mastercard.

At the moment, MasterCard with its new app is now in direct competition with the likes of Apple Pay and Google Wallet. But the MasterCard app is at a disadvantage since it only supports paying with MasterCard and not other competing payment systems.

For now, the app is not available for customers, and we doubt it will be due Apple Play and Google Play. These services do more than just what the MasterCard's app sets out to do, and thus it will never compete effectively.

Only time will tell if the app moves away from development, just don't keep your hopes up.
