Mobile service provider Verizon Communications claims its decision to reduce the data transfer speeds of its subscribers' unlimited data plans is in the best interest of all parties involved.

Verizon sent a letter on Aug. 1 to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler to defend this controversial decision receiving flak from all sides..

In July, Verizon announced that slower data transfer speed might be experienced by subscribers of the company's unlimited data plans starting Oct. 1. The company also has a policy for its users on the slower 3G network.

Last week, Wheeler wrote to Dan Mead, Verizon's chief executive, saying he was "deeply troubled" by the communications company's intentions, according to Yahoo! News.

Verizon responded with a letter saying its plans are in the best interest of all parties involved.

"The type of network optimization policy that we follow has been endorsed by the FCC as a narrowly targeted way to ensure a fair allocation of capacity during times of congestion," Kathleen Grillo, senior vice president of federal regulatory affairs at Verizon, said in the letter.

Grillo also said the practice is broadly welcomed with little or no dispute.

Verizon, the largest mobile service provider in the United States, said the procedure of limiting data transfer speeds of subscribers to avert congestion is widely implemented by its rivals and other broadband service providers.

"We absolutely know that it was the right thing to do and we know that it was in line with the FCC's principles," Mead said.

Wheeler's reproach of Verizon buttresses his reputation as a strong protector of Internet's users' interests and someone willing to reprimand Internet service providers whose practices and plans might hurt competition or customers, according to Reuters.

Wheeler's efforts are aligned with the FCC's idea of implementing "net neutrality" guidelines that show how broadband Internet providers deal with Internet traffic on their networks.
