A year ago, Eugenie Bouchard was ranked fifth in the world. She won her first WTA tournament in Nürnberg, reached the semifinals of the Australian and the French Open, defeated top seeds to enter her first grand slam final at Wimbledon, and qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore. The Canadian, however, hit a slump this year and fell in the rankings. From opening the year at no. 7 in the world, the Montreal resident slipped to no. 26 after her first round loss at Wimbledon.

It has been a year of struggle for Bouchard who only won four times since the Australian Open last January. Just before Wimbledon, she complained of an abdominal tear, but most fans believe that it wasn't the main reason for her defeat at the hands of Chinese qualifier Ying-Ying Duan in the first round of the tournament. Some speculate that outside activities took her mind off tennis; others blame it on her new coach, Sam Sumyk.

A report on Bouchard having problems beyond tennis also surfaced earlier this month. The article, based on an interview with broadcaster and Toronto Star columnist Damien Cox, pointed out the possibility of Bouchard's personal life affecting her game.

"I think there's something really wrong," Cox said as reported by Sportsnet. "The problem we have with all professional athletes is that a lot of the time we don't know what's going on in their lives. I think for a young woman travelling the world largely on her own, I'm sure there's a million different things going on."

As Bouchard falls, fellow age group contender Garbine Muguruza rises. The Spaniard, who was previously ranked no. 20, is now up in the rankings at no. 9 after her Wimbledon performance.

Muguruza, just a few months older than Bouchard, reached her first grand slam final at the All England Club this year defeating four seeded players before losing to world no. 1 Serena Williams.

A few players also moved up in the rankings including Maria Sharapova who is back at the no. 2 spot, Agnieszka Radwanska who is now at no. 7 after reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, and Madison Keys who entered the Top 20 at no. 18.
