Longtime Unchallenged Prosecutor in Washington Faces Canine Challenger

For the very first time, a ten-termer unchallenged prosecutor in Washington state faces an opponent with the most unusual background - and specie - to run for public office.

Bellingham County prosecutor David McEachran, a Republican, filed for reelection for the eleventh time. This time, as ABC News reports, he is being challenged by someone who is honest, charming - and has four legs.

The write-in candidate is Nyima. He has the right character voters are looking for a politician - he's likeable, loyal, and he listens to whatever you want him to do. As an added bonus, he is also a cute, furry Tibetan terrier.

Liberal Frank James, Nyima's owner, signed him up as a last-minute write-in candidate for the August 5 primary.

He thinks that it is about time that someone runs against McEachran because he's held the position for ten terms and is still running unopposed.

"It's for fun, but also to make a point," James told ABC News.

According to him, if no one ever runs against a politician, issues that really matter will not be tackled and politicians will not be held accountable.

James is an assistant professor at the University of Washington and a family doctor who was dubbed as an activist after he initiated opposition to a controversial development in Chuckanut Ridge.

After putting up word about Nyima's candidacy, several people have told him that they are registering to elect his dog as prosecutor.

Nyima has also received numerous endorsements from progressive political analysts including political blogger Riley Sweeney who had actually written the terrier's name on the primary ballot.

"Nyima might do a superior job to our current county prosecutor. It's just a sign that we need some change - and a fresh bowl of water," he told ABC News, clearly moved by a quote attributed to Nyima stating that anyone running unchallenged in an election is wrong democracy, and that there should be choices for the people to cast a vote.
