In the general population, those who are at increased risk for diabetes, both children and adults, are those who are overweight or obese and those with a sedentary lifestyle as enumerated by Dr. Ethan Balk of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the lead author of the evidence review.

According to Reuters, the Community Preventative Services Task Force reviewed 53 studies done between 1991 and 2015, and also published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, which describes that a combination of a healthy diet and physical activity are indeed effective at reducing risks for acquiring diabetes.

It is actually a well known fact that this combination is good in fighting the disease. Both healthy diet and exercise would lead to a healthier body, hence, lowered risk for diabetes. However, it is not really easy to just tell someone to better their health because it does not always work as it should. This is the reason why health promotion programs are important.

These programs will not only help people in improving their quality of health but will also be able to provide counseling, coaching, support or trainers to help them achieve their goal. in addition to that, there are also a number of specialists, some of whom are physiotherapists, nutritionists and the like, as per Healthline.

The goal of every program is mainly to help people with 'pre-diabetes' -- those with higher blood sugar levels that normal but not quite diabetes level yet. The results of the study showed that the programs were able to cause weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and also lowered the risk for developing diabetes.

In the review, it was also found out that certain community-based programs also helped in the weight loss process, lower blood sugar levels and risk reduction. Furthermore, there was also evidence that showed improvement in cholesterol levels and no reports of any long-term harm related to the program. These programs are actually part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program which is present in every state. Not only is it very accessible but cost-effective as well (only $650).
