He's unseeded but he's through. Dreadlocked Dustin Brown is on his way to his second quarterfinal appearance at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island after defeating sixth seed Sam Querrey on Thursday with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win.

The Nadal-killer from Germany took an early lead in the first set before closing it at 6-2. Querrey, however, saved a break point opportunity in the second to level the match at one set apiece. But it was all Brown in the third after breaking the American in the fifth game and holding serve all the way to take the match.

"It wasn't easy coming back today, knowing all I had to do was to hold serve," Brown said as reported by the ATP World Tour Website. "I definitely hit a lot of serves during my warm-up. Having been on the Tour for a while, I've run into these types of situations before. There no use thinking about whether we could have finished the match last night. All you can do is to stick with it and warm up the serve. I'm happy that I kept it together."

Brown's next opponent is Ivo Karlovic of Croatia who beat Malek Jaziri 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the previous round. Karlovic, known as the tallest player on tour standing at 6'11, reached the finals last year before losing to former no. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in a thrilling 3-setter.

Brown leads their head to head with 2 wins against 1, but this will be the first time both players will face each other on grass.

Elsewhere, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram defeated Mark Philippoussis and Ryan Harrison in the doubles quarterfinals with the score of 6-4, 6-3. Philippoussis, who came out of retirement to play with Harrison, entered as a wild card in the tournament but failed to score his 100th career doubles win.

Meanwhile Ram, who's also in the singles draw, saved two match points to enter the semifinals with a 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(2) win over Adrian Mannarino of France. Up next for the 31-year-old is Australia's John-Patrick Smith who won against Tatsuma Ito of Japan. The win marks Smith's first ever semifinal appearance in an ATP-level tournament.
