NBA Free-Agency Rumors: Cavs In A Standstill With Tristan Thompson, Eyes Russian Center Sasha Kaun Instead

The Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to re-sign Tristan Thompson as the team's management seems to be thinking twice in giving the free agent power forward the deal that they promised him earlier in the month.

Reports went out that Cleveland offered Thompson $80 million for five years, but Thompson wanted a maximum contract. More than a week have passed since the league lifted its moratorium for signing players and there is still no confirmation of any closed deals between the two parties.

What is worrying for the 24-year-old Canadian is that the Cavs are reportedly eyeing Russian center Sasha Kaun to fill his frontcourt spot instead, as per Bleacher Report.

Contrary to most reports that Thompson's re-signing with the Cavs is imminent, Centrio Times indicated that the gap between the two sides is still "at great distance apart."

The problem with Thompson's demand is that the Cavs are already way beyond the $70 million salary cap and $85 million luxury tax line set by the league for next season. With the maximum contracts of LeBron James and Kevin Love agreed this summer, a third max deal might be too much for Dan Gilbert to accept.

Even the other Cleveland free agents such as Matthew Dellavedova and J.R. Smith are affected by this predicament, which makes their re-signing stall as well.

Northeast Ohio Media Group's Joe Vardon reported that "Cleveland front office personnel dined with the 7-foot Kaun Friday night in Las Vegas" following the team's final game in the summer league.

The 30-year-old CSKA Moscow standout was with James and head coach David Blatt that evening to talk about the possibility of him playing for the Eastern Conference champions next season.

The Cavs could compensate Kaun a veteran's minimum of more than a half million dollars, a long way below Thompson's asking price. Kaun is said to be making around $3 million with CSKA, but the 256-pound center said that money is not an issue for him.

Cavs general manager David Griffin said that the management wants to sign Kaun and make him part of Blatt's rotation next season. The Russian played for Blatt's bronze medal-winning team during the 2012 London Olympics.
