A "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot is reportedly in the works. But if rumors are true, the original Xena actress, Lucy Lawless, may not be in the modern reboot.

Lawless, who played the character of warrior princess Xena from 1995 to 2001, took to Twitter Tuesday to quash reports that NBC was set to make a "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot.

"Sorry, friends! News of a [Xena] reboot is just a rumor. I'd love it to happen one day but it's still in the wishful thinking stage," tweeted the 47-year-old New Zealand-based actress.

Lawless made the tweet weeks after she went to the San Diego Comic-Con's Hit Fix to promote "Ash vs. Evil Dead." At the event last month, she told fans and reporters that she had been pitching the idea of a "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot, reported The Daily Mail.

"I'm always being peppered with questions [about] when the Xena movie is coming," she said of the interest still there for the series.

"Guys, I'm pitching my a** off to make it happen, whether it's with me or not," she said. "I think it'd be funny to have a reboot like Ash vs. Evil Dead, like middle-aged Xena in a muumuu with a bad attitude and a smoking habit," Lucy added.

At the time, Lucy also said that the "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot holdup was due to delays in securing the rights to the show and character. However, she did ask whether someone would be willing to pay up and revive the series.

Maybe it is only wishful thinking, but many are reportedly hoping that it is still too early in production to know for sure whether a "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot is possible.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the action-adventure drama is simply in the extremely early development stages, and NBC and NBC Universal International producers are now in search of a writer for the reboot.

The executive producers of the original show, Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, would reportedly be involved in the project as well, considered to be a "modern reboot." According to sources, the modern Xena would need to have the charisma and charm of Lucy Lawless and smarts of "Hunger Games" heroine Katniss Everdeen for the new generation.

Tapert and Raimi, who invented the show during its first run two decades ago, said that a "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot is indeed possible, and they are already planning the modern one to be a better concept than the "Percy Jackson" films.

Despite the immense popularity of the old Xena series, the "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot in live-action did become "wishful thinking," as Lucy described. Following the series finale, Lawless went on with her acting career having cameos in other popular TV shows like "Battlestar Galactica," Marvel's "Agents of Shield" and "Parks and Recreation," according to The Inquisitr.

If ever the "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot would indeed happen, it would seem that NBC would choose a new star to play the lead role or the show would simply be a simple 13-episode run. Sources told THR that Lawless is wanted both onscreen and behind the scenes if ever the franchise is reprised. The reboot is reportedly eyed for 2016.

For now, it is too early to know for sure.
