This might be a breakthrough for the ones who are trying to find a better way to combat the HIV virus and AIDS in general.  The Independent reported that an 18-year-old French girl, who has not received any treatment for HIV for more than a decade, miraculously managed to have her dangerous virus in remission.

For 12 years now, the French teenager has not received any medical treatment for her HIV infection.  She has been born with the disease, her mother got it during the later part of her pregnancy.  The family decided to halt the medical treatments when she turned six years old.

Dr. Asier Saez-Cirion of the Institut Pasteur in Paris was the one who presented this rare condition to the International Aids Society Conference in Vancouver.  Saez-Cirion called this as a "proof of concept", something she deemed a possibility is now a reality. It is indeed possible for HIV to be in long-term remission in children who have received good treatment.

According to ABC News, some of the HIV and AIDS researchers cited the possibility of more children who have been born with HIV to have their disease in remission too.  Dr. Mark Kline, an AIDS specialist for children, expressed how skeptical he is on the early drug intervention to be the sole reason for the French teenager's HIV remission. To him, it might be because of a genetic factor or the immune system that has suppressed the HIV's progression.

Kline further stated that he has treated thousands of infants with HIV and 99 percent of those he treated have not experienced what the French teenager has experienced. He said that making the early treatment for children with HIV the solution to preventing the disease's progression could be a dangerous conclusion.

"We can detect HIV in the cells, but cannot detect the viral replication in the plasma" Saez-Cirion said in an interview with the Times Live

At present, AIDS specialists still believe that early medical treatment should be given to children with HIV infection. They further stated during the International Aids Society Conference that their monitoring on the French teenager will be tightened to find out more on how young children with HIV can fight their condition.
