American forces have killed Muhsin al-Fadhli, the leader of an al-Queda terrorist group known as Khorasan, during an airstrike in Syria on July 8.

Fox News reported that al-Fadhli was inside a motor vehicle negotiating a road in the Syrian province of Idlib when it was fired by drone attack or a manned aircraft.

Pentagon spokesperson Captain Jeff Davis claimed that the dead militant was head of a seasoned group of fighters. Davis says the group were making plans to carry out terrorist operations against Americans and her allies, according to Al Jazeera.

American intelligence officials said Fadhli was part of the late Osama Bin Laden's inner circle, He was allegedly one of the few people, who had prior knowledge of the September 11 attack, according to the BBC.

U.S. authorities described Fadhli as the head of multinational jihadist group, which is estimated to have around 50 members. They were allegedly sent by al-Qaeda to Syria in order to attract American and European Islamic extremist to join their cause. They were also instructed to develop a plan of attack against American targets.

Before his death, Fadhli carried a $7 million bounty for his death or capture. Aside from leading the Khorasan cell, Fadhli is also the suspected head of the al-Qaeda operations in Iran.

This is the second time that Fadhli is reported to have been killed in an American airstrike. In September last year, a series of missile strikes were launched against militant targets in Syria and Fadhli was thought to be among the dead, but it turned out to be false.

The U.S. military is confident that his death will cripple his group's capacity to launched any attack against the United States and other friendly countries.

Bruce Reidel, who once worked with the CIA, agrees that his death is "serious." However, he says it is not enough to significantly derail the militants' objectives.

A Syrian based Islamic militant group claims that Khorasan is merely an American invention. Abu Mohammed al-Julani, head of al-Nusra group, claims that to have direct contact with the al-Qaeda leadership. He said that his group has been ordered to keep Syria out of the ongoing conflict with the United States and other Western countries.
