The first Americans

More details about the origins of the first Americans have been unveiled recently. There are two studies claiming that the first settlers in America may have been from Siberia or Australia.

CSM Monitor has found that two scientific strudies from different journals, the first stated that the first American settlers crossed from the Bering Land Bridge which was in Siberia. The second report suggests that the first American settlers had genetic roots from Australia.

At present more anthropologists and archaeologists have reported on the unique and diverse culture that the American continent had more than 10,000 years ago. This is because it is easier to dig up remains and have them studied with the use of different scientific tools. However, when it comes to finding out the origins of the first American settlers, more research remains to be done.

According to Daily Mail UK, the scientists generally agree that the first American settlers passed the Bering land bridge because this connected Asia and America in the ancient times.  The journey to America also probably began around 40,000 years ago.

However, there are some researchers who would argue on that. These researchers suggest that human population remained to be in Asia until 15,000 years ago before the ice melted and finally allowed a journey from Asia to America by foot.

A separate report on Time supports the evidence that the first Americans may be from the Australian or Australasia locations.  Eske Willersley from the Centre of Geo Genetics at the Natural History Museum, University of Copenhagen, was the one who led the study on the genetic study which revealed that the genes extracted from the first American settlers had origins from Australo-Melanasians, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and even South East Asia.

This mix might have greatly contributed to how diverse the American culture has become.  "It is quite surprising to find out that the ancient population of the New World has its roots from as far as Australasia," Willerslev said during an interview.

The Siberian origin theory was confirmed by Rasmus Nielsen, a computational geneticist from the University of California, Berkeley.  Nielsen and his team checked at the mitochondrial DNA of the Native Americans. The results pointed to a Siberian origin, which also meant that migration from Europe is also a possibility.
