"We will be spending the next few months scouting for locations, casting the film, but most importantly researching every event to make sure it is historically accurate and will pay respect not only to Loung Ung and her family, but to every single individual who suffered under the Khmer Rouge," the actress said.

In a statement, Jolie also revealed that the preparations will be ongoing from July and that shooting will start from November until the end of January. She added that the film will be shot within the country with Cambodian cast and crew and will also use the Cambodian language.

"It will be made for and with Cambodians. I look forward to working with the Cambodian production team, Bophana Productions, and all the great local artists," the actress added.

Over the next months, Jolie will be busy directing the film adaptation of Loung Ung's book "First They Killed My Father." The memoir tells the story about what it was like growing up under the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s, which led to the death of 1.7 million people.

Jolie has developed a close friendship with Ung and both will write the screenplay of the film. Jolie said that the purpose of the film was to bring characters that people will be able to relate with.

"The intent of this project is not to revisit the horrors of the war but to bring to the screen characters that people around the world will identify with and empathize with, and help to teach people about this country that I love and respect, and the Cambodian culture and family life I so admire," Jolie said.

Daily Mail also reported that Maddox, who she was able to adopt from Cambodia, will be joining her in the making of the film. The actress revealed that her 13-year-old son will be on set every day after school and hopes that the experience will help him better understand his identity.

"As Maddox and I prepare the film we will be side by side learning about his country," Angelina said."He is turning 14 next week and this is a very important time for him to understand who he is. He is my son but he is also a son of Cambodia."
