Cyndi Lauper's psoriasis struggle has been a years-long struggle, but it was only now that the singer has decided to reveal details about her battle with the debilitating skin condition, which also left her bed-ridden and depressed.

Her psoriasis battle may only have been shared now, but the 62-year-old said she hopes her story would be able to help others suffering from the skin disease, a condition causing cell build-up on the skin forming dry, itchy patches, according to The Inquisitr.

As Cyndi Lauper's psoriasis story was revealed during a raw new interview with People, the singer also shared that she has joined the National Psoriasis Foundation with a new informative campaign to help others with Psoriasis cope with the disease. In the interview, Lauper revealed that it came to a point she "felt like the Elephant Man."

Cyndi Lauper's psoriasis battle all began in 2010 when her scalp started showing irritation, reported People. She initially blamed her scalp's condition to a "bad bleach job," and her doctor gave her a special shampoo to treat her scalp's increasing irritations.

"First, I thought I just had a really bad bleach job... I am a suicide blonde, after all," Cyndi said in jest. However, the next two years proved worse as the singer noticed red, scaly patches not just on her scalp, but all over her body.

"My whole entire body was covered in a rash and scaly skin. And then it just started creeping up my neck. I felt swallowed by it," said Lauper.

"I tried every kind of natural cure I could. My immune system got a little wacky, and it took my strength away. My skin was so inflamed, it could not regulate hot and cold, so I had the chills all the time," she added.

Psoriasis was dealt with by the singer, who tried her best to conceal it with clothes and makeup. However, her condition still hadn't changed. She then tried wearing wigs and bright-colored hair extensions in order to avoid chemicals in dyes and keep people's attention on her hair and not on her skin.
Eventually though, Cyndi Lauper's psoriasis affected her famous voice, making her spiral into depression eventually putting a halt on her career.

Fortunately, this year, Cyndi found the solution to her medical condition through a medication that targets the immune system. She coupled the medication with medicated creams and bath salts, according to The Daily Mail.

Cyndi Lauper's psoriasis struggle may be far from over, with the singer having to avoid alcohol and food which could inflame her condition. However, she is now better managing her psoriasis, according to Lauper.

Her joining the National Psoriasis Foundation and Novartis is part of their new information More to Psoriasis.com campaign, which aims to bring awareness to the skin condition that most people suffering with the disease try to hide.

"You don't have to suffer in silence or live in pain," said Lauper. "It's not just a rash. It's a disease."

Cyndi Lauper's psoriasis battle may have put a dent on the famous singer's career, but the worst is over, and Cyndi is back on the road. She is now launching her Broadway hit "Kinky Boots" across Europe, Australia and Japan.
