The Suicide Squad are criminals with one common denominator: Batman. Almost all of the characters are part of The Dark Knight's Rogue's gallery.

With this fact, there is a plot rumor that the connection will be explored in the movie. The villains will discuss their "history" and eventually, forge a plot against their common enemy. But this is actually what the government is planning.

According to an Instagram post by Umberto Gonzales (aka scoop specialist El Mayimbe), even the government could not track down Batman and nobody knows him. The Suicide Squad is an indirect way to draw him out.

"According to sources, in the film Batman is some sort of big boogeyman that the government REALLY hates," the caption read. "Get this, prior to the events in #BatmanvSuperman, THE JOKER is the only one to really ever meet him or know him and that's why he's so important to Amanda Waller. They have footage of Batman in action which they watch. There is a bit of dialogue where they say Batman is the key to tracking down all 'the supers.'"

To follow that lead, the Joker is the key to Batman, and Harley Quinn is the key to the Joker. Screen Rant confirmed as much when the site stated that "no matter the specifics, hearing that characters like Joker, Harley, Killer Croc, El Diablo, and the rest of villains rumored to cameo as Belle Reve inmates are all people Batman put away raises some interesting notions."

One of the interesting factors in the film would be the role of the Joker. There are no clues on when he will make his appearance, but the only clues so far is that he is incarcerated and there may be flashbacks of torture scenes involving Harley Quinn (so eloquently teased at the end of the trailer) and her possible origin.

According to Movie Pilot, a deleted Instagram account showed the logo for Ace Chemicals, which, in the comics, is where a petty criminal called The Red Hood became the Joker. It is also where the Joker forced/enticed (there are different versions) Dr. Harleen Quinzel became Harley Quinn.

The inclusion of the Joker and Harley Quinn as well as the flashbacks inevitably connect "Suicide Squad" to Batman and the DC extended Universe. It is also "Step 1" of the government's effort to try and contain the "supers," a plotline that will run through DC and curiously, Marvel's movie universes.
