Through a string of Twitter and Instagram posts over the week, fans have confirmed Hollywood heartthrob Zac Efron will star in the big screen version of "Baywatch" together with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Following that, the actor posted on Instagram saying, "Cool to see the INSANE global reaction to our announcement yesterday for Zac Efron to co-star with me."

Actor David Hasselhoff and model Pamela Anderson were catapulted to fame as stars of the 90s hit TV series "Baywatch." Both played lifeguards in a Los Angeles Beach.

Johnson also made a few revelations on social media on what fans can expect from the film. Saying it will be "big, fun, global." "Baywatch" is set to start shooting as early as 2016.

Johnson also hinted that the female cast will be as interesting as the Efron and himself.

The Rock first talked about the possibility of a movie remake some 10 months ago in an Instagram post. But no one really picked up on it and people didn't talk much about it. According to reports from Miami New Times they had issues with casting and funding at that time.

Other rumors circulating are that Johnson's lifeguard character may take that of David Hasselhoff but nothing is confirmed yet, the news site added.

In a Reuters interview, Efron expressed as much anticipation for the movie. He enthused saying it will be "badass." The actor also added that the remake may take a different path than the original one, "I don't think it's going to be much like the old Baywatch to be honest."

Efron referred to Johnson who is co-producing the film as going "very ambitious" with the remake.

Efron has been seen touring across London promoting his movie "We Are Your Friends" to premiere across the country on Aug. 27.
