Milos Raonic bowed out of contention at the Rogers Cup on Friday, losing his quarterfinals match, 4-6, 7(7)-6(5), 3-6, against Feliciano Lopez.

The sixth-seed Canadian committed unforced errors in the first set, as the Spaniard capitalized with his twisting serves to come out on top. In the following set, Raonic held serve, but Lopez forced his opponent to a tiebreak which the Canadian won.

But the third set was all downhill for the frustrated Canadian, losing three break points to the left-handed Lopez to end the match in almost two hours.

The 32-year-old Lopez will now face in the semis the remaining player with highest seeding in the tournament Roger Federer.

Federer, who turns 33 on Friday, got the chance to celebrate his birthday with a win over fifth-seed David Ferrer in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

The match started off with the 17-time Grand Slam champion ahead, breaking Ferrer's serve thrice to take the first set. The Spaniard Ferrer bounced back on the second set, taking advantage of two break points from Federer to win it at 6-4.

But Federer would not let Ferrer rain on his parade, delivering numerous serves, volleys, and overhead smashes to come away with a victory.

Federer's last finals appearance at the Rogers Cup was in 2010, where he lost the crown to Andy Murray. Murray won't be able to do that after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sent him packing in the quarterfinals match on Thursday.

The Swiss is now 3-0 on matches played during his birthday previously defeating Max Mirnyi in 2003 and Ivo Karlovic in 2007.

The Federer-Lopez matchup is scheduled on Saturday following the other semifinals match between Tsonga and Grigor Dimitrov.
