Tsonga Caps off String of Upsets with Rogers Cup Title

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga capped off his stellar Toronto run on Sunday, pulling off the last of his string of upsets in defeating second-seed Roger Federer, 7-5, 7(7)-6(3), to capture his first Rogers Cup title.

Tsonga grabbed his first Masters title since 2008, and a fourth upset on higher-ranking players.

Both Tsonga and Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, would not let up on their serves in the first set, but the Frenchman saw an opportunity to break at 6-5 and grabbed it.

Tsonga had an opportunity to break Federer in the second set to win the match at 5-4 but a shout from the crowd appeared to have affected his concentration, giving the Swiss the point to tie the set.

Despite the opportunity to break, Tsonga surged on ahead and won the set on a tie-break.

His road to the finals was a heck of a feat, taking down World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the third round in straight sets, then eighth-seed Andy Murray in a thrilling quarterfinals match.

Tsonga faced crowd favorite Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals, taking down the Bulgarian in straight-set fashion.

Tsonga has never won a Grand Slam title since becoming a professional in 2004. His closest achievement was reaching the finals of the Australian Open in 2008 where he lost to Djokovic.

Nadal wasn't able to defend his crown in Toronto due to a wrist injury he sustained while practicing at his home in the Mallorca Islands.
