Compounds Found in Antibacterial Products Harmful to Pregnant Women

Antibacterial products can be found in most bath soaps, skin moisturizers, lotions, and hand washes.

Health experts raise concern about the possible effects of antibacterial products that give triclosan and triclocarban to pregnant women.

Benny Psycke from Arizona State University said that the problem with these compounds is that it can lead to developmental and reproductive problems in animals and humans.

He explains that these compounds can make the body resistant to antibiotics, which is a growing public health problem.

Psycke said they found triclosan in the urine samples of the pregnant women that they screened for their research.

They also found triclosan on the umbilical cord blood samples that they took, meaning that the compound can be transferred to the fetus.

Triclocarban, a compound that can effectively fight infections like the Staphylococcus Aureus, can be found in many of the samples, he explained.

He warns the public of the constant exposure to this product that can be found in antibacterial products, even though the human body has the ability to flush out triclosan and triclocarban.

These compounds are used in more than 2,000 products found in the market.

It can be found on toothpastes, soaps, detergents, carpets, paints, school supplies and toys, researchers say.

Rolf Halden, lead researchers for this study, said that less exposure to these products can quickly dilute the compounds in the person's body.

Starting in January 2017, the use of antimicrobial compounds triclosan and triclocarban on certain products in Minnesota will be banned.

Meanwhile, Johnson and Johnson and Procter and Gamble already announced that they will phase out the compounds on some of their products.
