A crossover between Marvel's superhero teams would be spectacular and it also seemed possible, until Jeremy Renner shoots down the speculation.

Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently appeared at Wizards World Chicago and he was asked about his thoughts on the possible "Guardians of the Galaxy" crossover with the "Avengers."

The actor gamely answered the question and praised GOTG as one of the funniest movies he has seen in a long time, but he was not at all optimistic about the crossover happening soon.

When pressed for an answer as to when it will happen, Renner said: "You'll be 80 years old by then, and I won't be Hawkeye anymore. I'll be Dead Guy." Watch the entire Q&A here.

Comic Book.com noted that we should take Renner's comments with a grain of salt considering the context of the interview and the fact that Marvel is very cautious about their actors giving away any details.

It was rumored that the Phase 3 movies would bring the cosmic and earthen heroes together, culminating in a grand crossover in "Avengers: Infinity War" which makes a lot of sense because both teams will presumably fight a common enemy: Thanos.

However, Renner indicated that his understanding of Marvel's plan is that "Guardians" will have a sequel "and then we've got 'Infinity War I' and 2."

While crossovers were easy to execute in the comic books, it would be challenging on film and /Film also recalled that GOTG director James Gunn (who will reprise his task in the sequel) was not so optimistic about the idea either.

"We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don't think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all this. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers' province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it's going to happen."

Still, Marvel may need to up the ante when it comes to their superhero teams. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" did not do as well in the box office as its predecessor and if Warner Bros. "Justice League" becomes a blockbuster, the reigning Superhero studio may have to get creative.
