An Iraqi air force helicopter flew into Yazidi refugee territory on Monday and supplied humanitarian aid and briefly touched down to pick up refugees, CNN reports.

The helicopter flew into Mount Sinjar and rolled bags and boxes of humanitarian aid out onto the ground from about 50 feet high before touching down. The boxes of aid contained diapers, milk, water, and food.

Even before touching ground, people were at the helicopter door clambering to give the Iraqi soldiers and Kurdish fighters their children, handing them over as quickly as possible and then jumping in. The helicopter filled quickly and about 20 people were saved in the end.

CNN reporter Ivan Watson was present on the helicopter and said he had never seen such a gung-ho effort nor such utter relief from the Yazidi who were saved.

The entire group of survivors began weeping. In a picture a little girl, now the poster-child for the rescue, stares off in disbelief as tears stream down her face.

Vian Dakhil, representative for the Yazidi people in the Iraqi parliament, burst into tears last week during a parliament meeting, pleading for aid to help the families trapped on Mount Sinjar. She said that ISIS has already murdered over 500 men and that the women captured have been taken as slaves to be sold in the slave market.

Official Fazil Mirani told CNN's Watson that as many as 70,000 people could be trapped in the area.

US forces helped, using airstrikes to eliminate ISIS targets around Mount Sinjar on Monday.

"Our aircraft remain positioned to strike any terrorist forces around the mountain who threaten the safety of these families," President Obama said on Monday.

Obama also said they are cooperating with international partners to come up with ways to bring the families to a safe place.

Gunners on the helicopter had to open fire to clear the area of ISIS when coming in and out.
