3D Reconstruction Developed To Show Earliest Animals

Researcher created a three dimensional reconstruction that showed the development of earliest animals on Earth, providing some answers about their extinction.

One of these is the rangeomorph, an organism that existed when most of the life forms were microscopic in sized.

These organisms lived 575 million years ago and grew up to 10 centimeters high - although some had grown up to two meters.

Researchers said that they were unlike modern organisms, making it difficult to determine their feeding pattern, growth rate and reproduction.

They believe that even though rangeomorph looked like plants, evidence showed that they were among the earliest animals.

Jennifer Hoyal Cuthill from University of Cambridge said that this animal lived in the deepest part of the ocean which made it impossible for them to do photosynthesis.

She said that they more likely absorbed nutrients from sea water through the surface of the body which would be difficult to do today.

Simon Conway Morris, one of the researchers, said that during the Ediacaran period the ocean contained organic carbon.

In the Ediacaran period, bacteria, green algae, enigmatic acritarch and planktonic single-celled algae were common in the seas.

The condition of the oceans changed with the Cambrian Explosion that started 541 million years ago, researchers explained.

The Cambrian Explosion was a period of rapid evolution when most of the major animal groups first emerged in the fossil records and the competition for nutrients increased.

During this period, the rangeomorphs, which are considered as a failed experiment in evolution, quickly died out.

They had no means of defense against evolving predators. They can no longer get the required nutrients they needed, leading to their extinction.

Cuthill said that as the Cambrian period took place, the Ediacaran species could no longer survive.

Nothing quite like them have been found ever since.
