(Photo : REUTERS/Rick Wilking) Investigators have barricaded the surroundings of Garfield Lagoon Park with police tape after a toddler's remains were found in the park over the weekend.

Investigators are hoping that forensic evidence would be able to shed some light on the identity of a toddler, whose dismembered remains were found at the Garfield Park Lagoon this past weekend.

Police initially received a 911 call on Saturday afternoon regarding a foot floating in the lagoon. After officers confirmed that the floating object was in fact a human foot, the area was cordoned off from the public and a full scale search - involving divers and a K-9 unit - was conducted. Police found another foot and two hands - believed to belong to the same victim - about 25 yards away, along with a 20-pound weight.

As investigators combed the area further on Sunday, they stumbled on the victim's head.

The victim has not been identified and authorities are still unsure if it is a male or female. It is unclear how long the remains have been in the lagoon. Authorities say the remains show advanced signs of decomposition.

Autopsy results are yet to be released. Nonetheless, the spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office Frank Shuftan has revealed that it may be impossible to determine the cause of death from the remains collected by the lagoon. Nonetheless, the medical examiners have vowed to look closely for forensic evidence as well as any obvious signs of trauma.

Locals say there have been no reports of a missing child in the community recently. Chicago police are reportedly cross-checking their books to determine if the remains correspond to any missing person's report.

Meanwhile, Jason Ervin, the alderman for the district, has revealed that investigators suspect the remains belong to a toddler aged between 2 to 4 years.

"My main concern is that this is not a larger incident," he told reporters. "I would hope and pray that it's just one child. But I don't think anyone can answer that definitively at this point."

Residents congregated around the park as the police search was ongoing on Sunday. Many, who share fond memories of the park, have expressed shock at the discovery of the toddler's remains there.
