Novak Djokovic Wins Tough First Match at W&S Open

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic overcome a tough stand from Gilles Simon 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Tuesday.

Coming off an upset at the Rogers Cup last week where he lost to eventual winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round, Djokovic appeared to be inconsistent with his play.

The recent Wimbledon champion got ahead on the first set as he broke the Frenchman twice to surge ahead and win the set.

In the second set, the seven-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic was plagued by unforced errors on his forehand, which proved crucial as he lost the set.

The Cincinnati Master is the only Masters Series events that the Serb hasn't won. Placing second four times in the past six years, losing three times to five-time W&S Open champion Roger Federer and once to Andy Murray.

The 27-year-old Djokovic has an extra motivation in winning the tournament. He will become the first and only tennis player in history to complete a Career Golden Masters, winning all nine Masters Series events at least once in their career.

Djokovic now surges on to the third round of the event and faces the winner of the Sam Querrey-Tommy Robredo match.

Tsonga was earlier eliminated by Mikhail Youzhny, ending his winning streak after eliminating four top 10 ranking players in Toronto last week to run away with the Rogers Cup title.

French Open champion Rafael Nadal wasn't able to defend his crown in Cincinnati due to a wrist injury he sustained while practicing at his home in the Mallorca Islands.
