Hillary Clinton's Remarks Not an Attack on Obama's Leadership

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called President Obama on Tuesday to clarify the remarks she made in an interview published by The Atlantic wherein she appeared to slam Obama's foreign policy.

In the interview, Clinton said Obama's foreign policy principle of "don't do stupid stuff," lacked depth and was "not an organizing principle" that great nations were supposed to have.

Clinton also criticized Obama's decision to not arm rebels challenging President Bashar Assad in Syria's civil war as a "failure" in preventing the conflict from spreading to Iraq.

Although tensions between the Clinton and Obama have been high, spokesperson Nick Merril for Clinton said that the remarks in the interview were not an attack on Obama's leadership abilities as commander-in-chief. He said Clinton looks forward to settle the matter when they cross paths at a gathering in Martha's Vineyard on Wednesday.

Differences on foreign policy have been a point of contention between the two since Obama's early opposition to the war in Iraq. Clinton, a New York Senator at the time, voted in favor of authorizing the use of force in Iraq in 2002 but recently announced that she made a mistake in that vote.

Clinton's latest criticism come during the wake of a number of issues overseas Obama is trying to juggle - from Syria, to Gaza, and Ukraine. The timing of the interview has been seen as a calculating move to distance herself from Obama's diminishing popularity.

Although she has not officially announced plans to campaign for the 2016 presidential elections, Hillary Clinton is the top choice for the Democratic party.

Spokesperson Merril was quick to point out that although their honest differences in the past are currently being magnified and are going viral on social media, it should be not be overlooked that they agree on broader issues.
