The light-heavyweight clash between titleholder Jon Jones and No. 1 Contender Daniel Cormier has been put on hold after the defending champion sustained a knee injury while training on Monday.

Jones apparently injured his left knee and sprained his ankle in a wrestling practice on Monday. I

In a recent interview, the champion expressed his frustration with the incident.

"It's very disappointing," Cormier stated in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "I started to train very hard. It's a little discouraging, but now I have time to get completely healthy. I don't know how hurt Jon is but we have to remember that I took this fight with a pre-existing (knee) injury. I could have fought through it, I just wish he would have done the same."

Originally, UFC 178 was headlined to feature highly-anticipated rematch between Jones and Alexander Gustafsson but the challenger suffered a torn meniscus back in July.

The need to conduct a surgery is still unclear as of the moment, he said.

Last week, tension started to build up as Jones and Cormier stood toe-to-toe at a media event to promote the fight slated as the main event of UFC 178.

Cormier pushed Jones, and the latter retaliated leading to a brawl before being separated.  The two were continuously exchanging banters on social media as well.

These two men proved that the controversial clash was more than just a publicity stunt. Earlier this week, Jones and Cormier made an appearance on SportsCenter to talk about what happened at the event. The heated exchange continued even behind the camera.

With the main card being postponed, it was replaced by a showdown between Demetrious "Might Mouse" Johnson and Chris Cariaso for the UFC flyweight title. The fight was previously headlined as the co-main event for UFC 177 on August 3.

The fight is now rescheduled next year, January 3, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
