The militants have battled their way into the city of Kunduz in Northern Afghanistan and freed hundreds of fellow militants from jail. They wanted that the Sharia law would be implemented.

According to CNN, Interior Ministry spokesman of Afghanistan, Sediq Sediqqi, said that the city of Kunduz has "fallen into the hands of enemies." He said that the Afghan security forces, which were assisted by air power from the Afghan army, were holding the insurgents who were targeting a prison at bay, as well as provincial police chief's compound and some other possible targets.

The gunfights had already ended but fighter planes were still flying over Kunduz. The authorizes were preparing to recapture the city from the Taliban insurgents as soon as possible, said Kunduz police chief spokesman, Sayed Sarwar Hussaini.

Early on Sep. 28, the Taliban fighters seized the main roundabout in Kunduz and made it to the prison. They free more than 500 inmates that flooded the streets of the city, Hussaini added.

On the other hand, one released inmates told CNN that they heard gunshots all throughout the day; however, it was at 4:00 P.M. when the prison guards of Kunduz left the compound. Later, the inmates broke all the doors as well as fences and started to run toward the main gate.

As soon as they opened the main gate, they saw the armed Taliban group outside the gate. The fighters then told the prisoners that they were free and could go home. So the prisoners who got out of the prison headed toward their homes, the inmate added.

The insurgents claimed as well a 200-bed hospital and posted on social media that proved they did indeed have control of the facility.
