A former high ranking judge of China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) has been accused of corruption, illegally accepting public funds, breaching judicial confidentiality rules and releasing court secrets.

On Tuesday, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) announced that Xi Xiaoming, the former vice president of the China's highest court, will face prosecution for corruption. The anti-graft body has found Xi guilty of violating party discipline and state governing laws. The charges against Xi follow an investigation into his activities, which began in July.

61 years old Xi Xiaoming has been accused of abusing his position by helping his family acquire benefits for their businesses. Xi, who has been part of the ruling Chinese Communist Party for 40-years, has since been expelled from the party. He has also been expelled from all public office positions.

Reports indicate that Xi has been placed under "coercive measures" - this term implies that he can be summoned by force. Officials can place surveillance devices at his residence and he can be detained or arrested at any time while his trial pends.

Xi is one of the most high-ranking judicial officials to face prosecution for corruption under President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign. President Xi has promised that the campaign would target both high and low ranking corrupt officials. The Chinese leadership believes that corruption is destroying the Communist Party and the country in general.

Since the start of the anti-corruption campaign, several senior officials have been arrested and prosecuted after being found guilty. Zhou Yongkang, the former chief of China's security, is perhaps the most high profile official to be prosecuted and imprisoned under the anti-corruption campaign.  Zhou was sentenced to life in prison after a secret trial in June found him guilty of corruption, abusing his position and leaking state secrets.
