Roger Federer Makes History at Western and Southern Open

Former World No. 1 Roger Federer made history by winning his 300th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 match, becoming the only player to achieve this milestone at the Western and Southern Open on Wednesday.

Federer, a five-time Cincinnati Open champion, won his opening match in the second round of the tournament against Vasek Pospisil, 7(7)-6(4), 5-7, 6-2.

The match, which lasted two hours, started off with both players holding serve and forcing the first set into a tie-break which Federer won.

In the second set, Pospisil was up 6-5 and broke Federer's serve to send the match into the third set.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion got to break the 24-year-old Pospisil twice in the deciding set to send the match in the history books as Federer's 300th ATP win.

French Open champion Rafael Nadal, who wasn't able to defend his crown in Cincinnati due to a wrist injury, placed second to Federer's feat at 281 wins.

"I've had some important ones over the one today," said Federer. "Nevertheless, it's real nice to reach such milestones."

Federer faces Gael Monfils in the next round, after he defeated 13th seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 6-1.

British No. 1 Andy Murray is still struggling to get back in form after a back surgery he had September last year. He also had a big adjustment after hiring coach Ivan Lendl in March.

''It's been a tough year,'' Murray said. "Obviously coming back from surgery is hard. Now I have had enough time to get over it. Obviously with Ivan, that was also tough.''

The 27-year-old Murray will go up against American John Isner in the Round of 16 who won against Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic 6-3 7(7)-6(1).

Isner reached the finals in Cincinnati last year before losing to Nadal.

''I'm off to a very good start this year. I love this tournament. I feel very comfortable here,'' Isner said.
