‘Survivor’ Season Premiere to Face Possible Delay Due to Editors’ Strike

The editing team of the hit reality show "Survivor" has spoken.

Members of the Motion Picture Editors Guild took to Twitter early Thursday morning to announce that the show's editors walked off their jobs. The walk-off happened with just six weeks before the long-running hit show's 29th cycle is set to premiere.

"The post crew of @CBS #Survivor (@Survivor_tweet) has walked off the job, halting post for an @IATSE contract! #STRIKE," MPEG posted on its official Twitter account.

Insiders told Entertainment Weekly that MPEG had previously notified the producers of the show that their editors wanted a union contract. The producers' failure to reply to the Guild's letter prompted the editors to go on strike.

Some two dozen employees were reportedly seeking health coverage and pension benefits, according to Deadline.

In a statement, Editors Guild President Alan Heim, A.C.E., said the editing team plays a big role in shaping "Survivor" into a wildly successful reality show that it is known now, and what the editors want is to get "the same benefits, pensions, and basic protections that their counterparts elsewhere" have been enjoying.

"Survivor" aired its premiere cycle, "Survivor: Borneo," in 2000. It went on to span 28 successful seasons that earned the show 16 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program in 2003. The show's host, Jeff Probst, won the award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition program four times since 2008.

The show's 29th season, titled "Survivor: San Juan del Sur - Blood vs. Water," is scheduled to premiere on Sept. 24, but the reality show could face some delays due to the strike.

CBS recently announced that the new season's premiere is going to be extended to 90 minutes, which poses more workload for the show's editors. In 2012, Probst revealed in an interview that the editing team shoots approximately 250 hours of footage in order to produce one episode.
