A college in China has drawn outrage from students and netizens after one of its classes required its female students to sign a pledge to their future husbands and children to abstain from pre-marital sex.

The college, which is located in Xi'an, the capital of northwest China's Shaanxi province, is offering a course called "Youth of No Regrets," according to media reports. The female students of the class are expected to sign an agreement that states:

"I promise to myself, my family, my friends and my future spouse and children that I will refuse all kinds of premarital intercourse before I step into a life-long monogamous marriage. And I will avoid infidelity after marriage."

According to a 2012 survey conducted by China's Tsinghua University, more than 71 percent of people in China said they have had premarital sex. However, only 43.1 percent said they approve of premarital sex, and 24.6 percent voiced disapproval.

The poll also found that 33.7 percent said that "sex is a basic need and has nothing to do with morality," and 27.7 percent believed "two people can have sex with each other as long as they are truly in love, even before marriage."

It also revealed a disparity between how men and women in China view pre-marital sex, as 33.5 percent of the female respondents said they disapproved of premarital sex, compared with only 17.8 percent of men.

In 2010, a Peking University-led group released survey that found that 20 percent of young women who had pre-martial sex had unplanned pregnancies, 91 percent of whom had abortions. It also showed that some 60 percent of the needs for counseling and more than 50 percent of the needs for services in reproductive health are not met, mostly due to "feeling embarrassed" or "not serious" perceived.
