John Lennon's precious 1962 J-160E Gibson guitar was recently sold for $2.4-million (£1.5 million) to an undisclosed buyer at a California auction.

According to New York Post, the famous Gibson guitar was used by Lennon in composing and recording some of the Beatle's classics such as "P.S. I Love You" and "Love Me Do."

"I knew it would go over $1-million. I had no idea that it would go over $2-million," said Beverly Hills auctioneer Darren Julien.

"It's such an important part of Lennon's career and Beatles history," Julien added. "I can tell you, there has never been another guitar like this offered up for auction."

Lennon's J-160E Gibson guitar is said to be one of only two of its type that was flown to London from the U.S. in 1962.

The Daily Mail said Lennon purchased the guitar in September 1962 in Liverpool for $242, or £161. Lennon used the guitar for a year and then swapped it with George Harrison's. The guitar, however, went missing in 1963 during the Beatles' Christmas shows in London, and had been missing for more than 50 years.

According to a report by BBC news, the missing guitar was bought by a certain John McCaw of San Diego for $275 during the 1960s. Last year, McCaw read an article in a magazine that featured the J-160E Gibson guitar.

Experts checked it and confirmed the authenticity of the guitar.

Andy Babiuk, an expert in scrutinizing Beatles' musical instruments, was able to check the guitar. He confirmed that, indeed, it was Lennon's J-160E Gibson guitar as can be gleaned from its unique markings.
