In 2013, fans of the show saw Dr. Michael Domeier tagged a pregnant great white shark with a goal of finding the pupping grounds, which he said need protection. Domeier was helped by the late actor, who took up marine biology in college.

When Walker died in November, Domeier and his team was only three weeks into the production for the second part of their journey, "Spawn of Jaws: The Birth." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Domeier said he was initially reluctant to finish the project, but decided to complete it in honor of his friend who is a staunch support of sharks and marine conservation.

Domeier said he first met Walker on the initial mission for National Geographic's "Shark Men" in 2010. It wasn't a match made in heaven, the scientist admitted, but he said that he was eventually won over by the actor's passion for the ocean and the two became fast friends.

In fact, Domeier said he even had to dissuade Walker several times from quitting acting to go back to school, telling him that he can have more influence on the issue of marine conservation as a celebrity.

For last year's "Spawn of Jaws," Domeier tagged a great white shark, named Gil Rakers, in order to locate pupping grounds. A year later, the team observed Gil Rakers heading toward somewhere, which prompted Domeier and his team of researchers to start organizing.

Domeier said their go time started in April when they saw Gil Rakers "heading towards the mainland." They didn't know then where the great white was going, and Domeier said fans of the show will have to watch the special to find out.

"Spawn of Jaws: The Birth" will premiere Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Discovery.
