Floyd Mayweather Jr. has proven that he will remain controversial - even in retirement. The retired pound-for-pound champ recently said in an interview that he does not see anything special in Gennady "GGG" Golovkin to become the next great pay-per-view boxing superstar unless he moves up in weight and fights Andre Ward.

Talking to Fight Hype's Ben Thompson, Mayweather bragged that his PPV numbers "will never be duplicated." He said boxing skills alone are not enough to sell tickets and become a "pay-per-view star" - referring to Golovkin, who is currently being crowned by a lot of boxing pundits as the potential heir to Mayweather's throne.

The 33-year-old Kazakh brawler is also undefeated and is the current unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBC (interim) and IBO middleweight champion after stopping hard-hitter David Lemieux in the eight round last month.

ESPN's Dan Rafael recently reported that initial figures shows that the Golovkin-Lemieux fight earned "just over" 150,000 buys, which is considerably quite low when compared to Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao's fights.

"You have to have a certain aura about yourself, a certain charisma about yourself, a certain sales pitch about yourself; it takes a total package," said Mayweather. "The thing is, as far as boxing, it's all about taking risks and taking chances. I did it."

The unbeaten American continued by saying that GGG should also take a risk by moving up to super middleweight and face its lineal champion - 31-year-old Ward - if he wants to have a shot at becoming a legitimate PPV superstar.

"I'm going to be convinced when he can go up and beat Andre Ward. Until then, I'm not convinced," Mayweather added.

During his 49-fight career that spanned almost 19 years, Mayweather took home approximately $700 million from guaranteed purses alone. This gives him the distinction of being the highest paid boxer in the history of the sport.
