The first batch of Sony's Ultra HD discs will be released in 2016; the company did not provide specifics about the release date. The batch will include "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Hancock," "Salt," "Chappie," "The Smurfs 2," and "Pineapple Express."

Sony said that its Ultra HD library will soon grow to include newly released films as well as television content.

"By some estimates, consumers will own over 100 million Ultra HD television sets by 2019. Sony Pictures' 4K Ultra HD Discs will deliver consumers the ultimate home theater experience, with stunning picture and sound quality," Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Man Jit Singh told Variety.

The first studio to release Ultra HD Blu-ray disc is Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The announcement was made at the 2015 IFA conference in Berlin when Samsung revealed its plans to produce the first Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc player.

The studio plans to release Ultra HD versions of the following films; "Fantastic Four," "Life of Pi," "Kingsman: The Secret Service," "Exodus: Gods and Kings," "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs have a resolution four times that of high definition. It also includes high dynamic range that creates vibrant color, greater contrast and brilliant highlights, as well as immersive audio formats.

To be able to view Ultra HD Blu-ray format videos, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player and an Ultra HDTV are needed.
